The following video from the DSA explains all about the driving test with effect from October 4th 2010. The main difference from that time is that you will be asked to do 10 minutes independent driving; in order to allow for this extra time in the test, you will be asked to carry out only one of the 4 set manoeuvres instead of 2, as happens now.
How often have your friends told you that driving examiners have to fail a certain number of candidates so it's just luck on the day?
How many of your friends who failed their tests have said "it wasn't fair, he/she failed me for no reason"?
Or maybe a friend insisted what they did wasn't bad enough for a serious fault?
And you listen to all these rumours and you get nervous or very worried about your test, right?
Well, the best person to tell you all about what really happens on the driving test is a retired driving examiner and one such person has produced lots of really useful information about the driving test so why not take a look? Just to whet your appetite, read this short story from this examiner, Ordeal on the M11 (you'll be surprised when you reach the very end!).
Since April 6th 2010 all test candidates are now asked by the examiner, before the start of the test, if they would like to have their driving instructor present (as an observer only!) on their test. If you say yes to this, then you will at least know that your instructor will have seen everything that has gone on and so will be in a better position to debrief you properly after the test. You will then understand exactly why the examiner marked a particular fault against you.
