Advanced Driving: Certificate of Professional Competence

So you think you’re a good driver?  Prove it!

Maybe you are a good driver, but how do you prove it to others and to your insurance company?

By joining the top 10% of drivers who have gained their

Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC).

The CPC is a requirement for all HGV and bus/coach/PCV drivers and is now beginning to be introduced for company car and light van drivers by fleet managers, although it is unlikely this will ever become a legal requirement for category B drivers.  However, with its principle focus on eco-efficiency in driving, this does make a lot of sense for company drivers because of the amount of money businesses will save.

Great News!  The CPC is now available for you, the private driver!

So, what exactly are the requirements of the CPC?

You will be required to show that you understand how to drive in an eco-efficient manner, making smooth use of all controls and demonstrating pro-active forward planning with excellent hazard awareness and reduction skills.

In the following image, consider what might be where you can't see:

What might be where you can't see?

So, what are the benefits of gaining a CPC?

  • you will save fuel, typically around 15%, sometimes more, depending on your current style of driving;
  • you will save on vehicle servicing and repair bills;
  • you will become a more relaxed driver due to heightened observational skills, pro-active forward planning and the knowledge that you have the ability to reduce, often eliminate, potential hazards from other drivers;
  • your journey times will often improve, rather than increase as is the popular perception when referring to eco-efficiency in driving;
  • you should be able to reduce your insurance premiums as most insurers are now recognising the value of the CPC (if not, we may be able to put you in touch with an alternative insurer who will offer you the discount).
